What Twin Cities Homeowners Actually Pay for Interior Painting

The average interior painting project Paris Painting completed in the Twin Cities in 2026 was about $5,000. Half of all projects fall between $2,400 and $6,800; the median is right around $4,000. A single bedroom runs $500 to $900 for walls, or roughly $1,200 to $1,800 with the ceiling, doors, windows and trim. Repainting the walls of an entire 2,500 sq ft home runs $6,000 to $9,000, and a kitchen cabinet refinish is usually $4,500 to $8,000.

Those figures come from the 400+ interior projects Paris Painting completed in 2026 and the 2,200+ interior estimates we wrote in 2025 and 2026. Finished projects typically come in about 15 percent above the base bid once homeowners add options (ceilings, closets, trim) and time-and-materials repairs. Below is room-by-room pricing pulled straight from recent proposals, what changes the number, and what is included when you hire us.

Expect more for a dark-to-light or light-to-dark color change (an extra coat or primer), for walls over 9 feet, and for lead-safe prep on pre-1978 woodwork (about $140 per room).

Whole-home interior painting cost

When most or all of the rooms are on the list, the per-room cost drops because setup, protection and cleanup are shared. Here is what full-home repaints typically look like by size:

Kitchen cabinet painting cost

Cabinet refinishing is the most labor-intensive interior job we do, and the one where prep quality shows the most. Typical Twin Cities kitchens run $4,500 to $8,000; large kitchens with islands, built-ins or two-tone finishes reach $10,000 to $12,000. Bathroom vanities and small built-ins are priced the same way, typically $800 to $1,600.

Every cabinet proposal includes: removing doors, drawers and hardware; degreasing and scuff sanding; a full oil-based bonding primer; two sprayed coats of cabinet enamel such as Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane; a dust-controlled spray area on site or off; and reinstallation. Drilling for new hardware in a different profile is billed at $95 per hour.

Repairs, wallpaper and specialty work

Handyman carpentry (trim, sills, doors)$135 per hour + materials, 4-hour minimum

Repairs are always listed as their own line so you can see exactly what the fix costs versus the paint. For anything found after the estimate, you approve an hour range before the crew starts.

What happens at a Paris Painting estimate

Interior estimates are done in person and take about an hour. Your estimator walks each room with you, listens to what you want to change, checks wall and ceiling condition (nail pops, cracked plaster, water stains, old wallpaper seams), and measures. Then you get a printed proposal on the spot, priced room by room, and we sit down and go through it together. Accept it that day or take your time; the price holds for 90 days.

How to read your proposal

  • Every room is its own section with its own total, so you can add or drop rooms and watch the price change.
  • Every surface is its own line: walls, ceilings, baseboards, crown, doors, window trims, closets, radiators, cabinets. Each line names the product, sheen, primer, number of coats and finish level.
  • Options are priced but marked "not included in the bid price." Ceilings, closets and trim are often listed this way so you can decide.
  • Repairs found at the estimate are priced as a fixed section. Anything found later is time & materials at the rate on the proposal, and you approve an hour range first.
  • Finish levels are defined in writing. Level 3 (our standard): walls pole-sanded, imperfections filled and sanded, existing texture remains. Level 5: full skim coat and prime for a uniform surface. Cabinet Level 2: holes filled flush, sanded, sprayed.

What changes the price

  • Ceiling height. Nine-foot walls are the baseline. Stairwells and two-story foyers need staging and cost more per square foot.
  • Color change. Deep reds, navies and blacks going to a light neutral (or the reverse) need a primer or third coat.
  • Surface condition. Nail pops, cracked plaster, water stains and old wallpaper seams all add repair time. Older St. Paul and Minneapolis homes with plaster usually need some.
  • Furniture and access. Empty rooms paint faster. We move and cover furniture, but a packed room adds time.
  • Finish level. Standard Level 3 finish leaves existing texture and profile but removes rough spots. A true Level 5 skim-coated finish for critical lighting is quoted separately.
  • Season. Interior work is available year-round. Winter is our best availability and our lowest minimum.

Project minimums

During the busy season (roughly April through October) our interior minimum is $1,000. In winter it drops to about $500 to $800, which is one painter for one day, walls only. If you have a single room, winter is the best time to book it.

What's included with every interior project

  • Floors, furniture and fixtures covered and protected
  • Light sanding, cleaning, filling and sanding minor imperfections
  • Spot priming drywall patches and bare wood; caulking open cracks
  • Two coats of premium paint from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore or Hirshfield's
  • A dedicated project manager, on-site kickoff and final walkthrough
  • Daily cleanup, all garbage removed, and touch-up paint left for you
  • 3-year warranty and complimentary touch-ups
  • $2,000,000 liability insurance and full workers' comp coverage

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to paint a room in Minneapolis?

A standard bedroom runs $500 to $900 for walls only, and roughly $1,200 to $1,800 with the ceiling, doors, windows and trim. Bathrooms start around $200 for walls. Living rooms and stairwells are $700 to $1,300 for walls.

What is the average cost of an interior painting project?

The average interior project Paris Painting completed in 2026 was about $5,000, with half of all projects between $2,400 and $6,800. Finished projects typically come in about 15 percent above the original base bid once options and repairs are added.

What does interior painting cost per square foot?

Whole-home walls-only projects in the Twin Cities work out to roughly $2 to $3.50 per square foot of living space. Adding ceilings, trim and doors brings the full-service figure to about $4 to $7 per square foot.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?

Most Twin Cities kitchens cost $4,500 to $8,000 to have cabinets professionally sprayed, with a typical job around $6,400. Large kitchens or two-tone finishes can reach $10,000 to $12,000.

Do you have a minimum project size?

Yes. $1,000 during the busy season and roughly $500 to $800 in winter (one painter, one day, walls only).

How long does interior painting take?

A single room is usually a day. Whole-home projects run several days depending on rooms and repairs. Cabinet projects take longer because of cure time between coats. Your proposal review covers the expected schedule.

Do I need to move my furniture?

No. We move furniture to the center of the room and cover it. Emptying shelves, closets and cabinets before we arrive keeps the price down.

What paint do you use?

Premium lines from Sherwin-Williams (Emerald, Duration Home, Scuff Tuff), Benjamin Moore (Regal Select, Aura, Advance) and Hirshfield's Platinum Ceramic and Radiance. The product and sheen for every surface is written on your proposal.

Can the same estimator quote my exterior?

Yes. Every interior estimator also quotes exterior painting, so one appointment covers both.

Easiest work I've ever contracted out Paris stained my fence and it looks great. They keep me informed about the timing, arrived on time and completed the job quickly. The bonus, I was on vacation and they completed the entire job by the time I returned.

Scottie did a wonderful job painting the trim on my new windows. I chose to have a sprayed finish and his attention to detail was fantastic. The communication with staff throughout the project was excellent. I would heartily recommend using them.
