Hi, Nate here, from Paris Painting.

A question we often get from clients is “what is good paint?”

There are three things you need to know to make a good choice for paint:

  1. Good Paint is designed for our climate

  2. Good Paint will have a better long-term bond

  3. Good Paint will have better coverage for protection

The first thing you need to know is: A good paint will be designed to last longer in our harsh Minnesota climate.

Moisture comes in and out of your substrate causing your exterior to expand and contract as the seasons change. In Minnesota, you need a durable paint with enough elasticity to accommodate our changing seasons.

Second, good paints will have higher resin content as it creates a better long-term bond.

Therefore, for most of our jobs we recommend Duration a premium product from Sherwin Williams.

Duration has a higher level of elasticity to prevent cracking, checking and peeling as the substrate expands and contracts over the seasons and it has more resin content it than many other products, giving you a better long-term bond.

Third, a good paint will have thicker coverage for better protection. One brush stroke of Duration paint provides of 7 mils of thickness vs. your standard paint – which is only 4 mils. That is almost double the coat and protection.

Paint is typically around 15% of the price of your project, it is worth it to get the best paint possible and maximize the labor value of your investment the first time. Also, because we do a lot of volume we get paint at a cheaper price than what you can buy at home depot or a local paint store.

A good paint is worth the investment. It will be elastic for our climate seasons, have more resin for a long-term bond, and be thicker for better coverage & protection.

Should you have any questions regarding paint, we would be happy to answer them during your estimate.
